The importance of rip-rap for round goby invasion success – a field habitat manipulation experiment

چکیده
In a recent study, we showed how local-scale climate change impacts (increased temperature, reduced rainfall, shifts in peak rainfall) affected the hydrology of channelised lowland European river (reduced flow, reduction flood events, increased siltation, macrophyte growth), allowing native fish species to recolonise bankside zone and reduce density invasive round goby Neogobius melanostomus by effectively removing its preferred habitat, rip-rap bank stabilisation. Here, report on follow-on study whereby stretches newly vegetated were stripped back clean assess whether presence/absence was major factor affecting non-gobiid, tubenose Proterorhinus semilunaris abundance. Our results confirmed as increasing abundance, hence invasion success, rivers, while banks saw an increase abundance diversity non-gobiid species. While gobies no preference for habitat type, their numbers significantly colonised larger more aggressive gobies. We discuss our light artificial restoration measures undertaken Danube Rhine potential role flagship cost-effective, large scale projects with multiple ecosystem benefits.

Twenty years of invasion: a review of round goby Neogobius melanostomus biology, spread and ecological implications.
The round goby Neogobius melanostomus is one of the most wide-ranging invasive fish on earth, with substantial introduced populations within the Laurentian Great Lakes watershed, the Baltic Sea and several major European rivers. Rapid expansion and deleterious ecosystem effects have motivated extensive research on this species; here this research is synthesized. Maps of the global distribution ...
متن کاملInvasion genetics of the Eurasian round goby in North America: tracing sources and spread patterns.
The Eurasian round goby Neogobius melanostomus (Apollonia melanostoma) invaded the North American Great Lakes in 1990 through ballast water, spread rapidly, and now is widely distributed and moving through adjacent tributaries. We analyse its genetic diversity and divergence patterns among 25 North American (N = 744) and 22 Eurasian (N = 414) locations using mitochondrial DNA cytochrome b gene ...

متن کاملinvestigating the feasibility of a proposed model for geometric design of deployable arch structures
deployable scissor type structures are composed of the so-called scissor-like elements (sles), which are connected to each other at an intermediate point through a pivotal connection and allow them to be folded into a compact bundle for storage or transport. several sles are connected to each other in order to form units with regular polygonal plan views. the sides and radii of the polygons are...
RCEX: Rip Current Experiment
The long-term goals are to understand surf zone processes related to rip current systems through field observations. Rip currents occur commonly on most beaches and dominate many. It is recognized that beaches with straight and parallel contours are not a stable morphologic configuration whereas more complex beaches, which support the existence of rip current morphology, are stable and more com...
